Demetrio is a must-generational, Zapotec weaver from Teotitlan del Valle Oaxaca, Mexico. He employees many weavers under his business La Cupula, which is focused on creating traditional, heirloom quality rugs with stunning designs and colors derived from natural materials. Some of the natural dyes used include cochineal, bujuco moss, pecan, pomegranate, marigold, wild tarragon, and indigo, to name a few.
I was able to take a weaving and natural dye intensive with Demetrio in 2019 down at his bed & breakfast in Teotitlan. We had a great time and he and his family were such generous hosts.
As most of their business relies on tourism, sales have been pretty low. So Demetrio has decided to bring the rugs to us! If you are around this weekend, please plan a visit to meet Demetrio and admire and be inspired by these beautiful weavings. And perhaps snag an heirloom for your yourself or a very special loved one.
