6.8.24 Deflected Double Weave with Sybil Shiland

Regular price $365.00 Sale

Saturday & Sunday, June 8th & 9th + Sunday, June 30th

In this class we will explore designing and weaving deflected double weave, a two-layered fabric that is interlaced throughout.  Deflected double weave is a weave structure that is a little unpredictable - by combining  float  and plain weave blocks, the weaver can break the grid imposed by the warp and weft.  It can creates curves, circles, and often unusual shapes after the fabric is finished.

Students will adapt a twill draft to be woven in deflected double weave blocks.  We will weave samples using a variety of materials, treadling sequences and tie-ups.  If you'd like to bring your own loom, please note that we will be working on 8-harness looms.

This class is not suitable for beginners.  Students should be comfortable with making a warp, dressing a loom, and reading weaving drafts.

We will meet for a weekend intensive and then once more two weeks later to learn how to finish and discuss/plan future projects.  If you are renting a loom, you will need to come in and work on your loom outside of class time - an estimated 15-20 hours.  Please note that normal shop hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm.

Class times are as follows:

Saturday, June 8th from 9:00am-5:00pm *1 hour lunch break

Sunday, June 9th from 9:00am-4:00pm *1 hour lunch break

Sunday, June 30th from 9:00am-11:00am

Cost is $428 and includes 3 weeks of loom rental ($63).  If you have your own loom that you'd like to use, cost is $365.  If you will be bringing your own loom, please know that it is in working order with all of its parts.

Materials will be available for purchase and will cost $30-$60 depending on your yarn choices and the size of your project.  You are also welcome and encouraged to bring your own materials.
