Regular price $170.00 Sale

Saturday, July 12th - 11:00am to 5:00pm

Hawktail Sweepers are a non-traditional style based on the symmetrical Hawktail whisk broom.  Unlike traditional sweepers that have to be tied and taught in multiple sessions to allow for soaking and drying the broomcorn, Hawktail sweepers can be tied, stitched, and finished in one go.  The style is visually striking because of the stair-stepped pyramid of cord and the symmetrical nature of the broom that lends itself to striping or ombreing color out from the center.  Hawktail Sweepers also make excellent hearth brooms when tied onto shorter sticks.

This class is intended for students who have tied whisk brooms previously and did not find it physically taxing.  Tying onto a broomstick is more challenging, as it requires a great deal of tension to attach the broom head successfully.  The way Hawktails Sweepers are tied is relatively simple compared to the traditional styles but requires additional strength and dexterity.   The workshop is taught in a small session of 3-5 students so that I can give everybody individual attention and ensure you leave class with a beautiful, functional broom.

Tying a broom is a stress-reducing, full-body practice -- and a great workout. You’ll use both feet to hold tension and both hands to manipulate the cord and wrap the broom tightly.  You'll feel this in your arms and shoulders when you pull the cord tight, and then tighter!  Broom tying is best attempted with bare or stockinged feet, so please be prepared to take your shoes off during class.
