Learn the relaxing and portable techniques for hand piecing curves, squares and appliqué to make a bag or pillow. No sewing machine needed. No paper piecing. A simple needle and thread and some scrap fabrics will get you started. You can take the project with you on a plane, sitting in the dentist's office, on a zoom meeting, or watching hockey practice. And it’s a great way to use up scrap fabrics or cut up bits of old favorite clothing. Students can participate in a scrap exchange in order to build and add variety to their stash. All levels welcomed.
Supplies are intended to be a minimal cost. Use whatever you have at home or borrow from a friend. We will talk more in depth about different kinds of simple sewing tools.
Please Bring:
- A variety of lightweight fabrics in dark and light colors. Cotton is preferable. Can be lightweight fleece, polyester, too. No denim. Scraps cut up or whole pieces no smaller than 8” square. Gather clothes you no longer wear or a worn tea towel or ugly pillowcase. Make a trip to the Goodwill Bins. Collect various light and dark fabrics that are playful. Go out of your comfort zone and bring a few ‘ugly’ fabrics. Bring more than you think you need. We will have a scrap exchange, if you want to participate.
- A spool or two of any kind of sewing thread, Perle cotton thread (12 or 8), embroidery floss.
- Any kind of sharp hand sewing needle that is easy for you to thread. Bring at least two.
- A cereal/cracker box that you will cut up to make templates
- Sharp sewing scissors.
- Paper scissors or utility knife to cut cardboard/cereal box
- Pen/marker and paper take notes or draw.
- A lunch or snack
Maggie will have 16” or 14” square pillow forms for purchase if you plan to make a pillow.
Instructor Bio:
I think I started hand stitching when I was about five and really haven’t stopped since. I studied Stitched Textiles at the Opus School of Textile Arts in London and later earned a BFA in Painting/Drawing from Maine College of Art and Design. I love hand stitching clothing and quilts and teaching others to do the same. I have taught classes on this subject online, locally, and overseas. You can see my work on Instagram @maggiemuth
