4.15.23 Natural Dye Intensive with Rachel Bingham Kessler

Are you fascinated by natural dyes?  Plant stuffs create a stunning array of colors that all seem to go together. In this workshop you’ll learn how to prepare mordants, modifiers, and vats to create and blend colors for a wide palette. We'll create samples cards for your records.

Materials to bring:

  • A fat quarter (approximately 18" x 22") of 100% white silk fabric*
  • a fat quarter of 100% white cotton fabric
  • a fat quarter of 100% white linen fabric*
  • 100 grams of white 100% wool yarn*
  • a black sharpie for labeling 
  • 1 plastic shopping bag to be cut up for labels 
  • durable rubber gloves (Mr. Clean’s are my go to dye gloves)
  • an apron or clothes you don't mind getting color on
  • a lunch (~45 minute lunch break)

 Rachel Bingham Kessler is a plant dye educator, writer, sewist, and painter with a degree in Art Education. She runs 44Clovers, a small batch yarn company specializing in Maine primitive wool breeds and plant dyes. She’s taught fiber and plant dye workshops at venues such as Squam Art Workshops and The Maine Fiber Frolic. Her work has been published in Taproot Magazine and Northern Journeys Magazine. She will be teaching Natural Dyeing in Ireland this October in collaboration with Knittingtours.com.  She lives on Peaks Island off the coast of Portland, Maine with her husband and two kids.
