If you are brand new to spinning, the navajo spindle is a great introduction! Katharine Cobey calls the Navajo spindle the “great teacher.” Ever since learning how to use one, she has started all of her beginning and intermediate spinners on a Navajo support spindle. This way a student can work very slowly at first - not something possible on a drop spindle or a wheel - building up speed as her drafting improves.
That being said, if you are an intermediate or experienced spinner, the navajo spindle is a great tool to improve upon you long draw skills.
The cost is $115 and includes a Schacht Navajo spindle and local, Maine wool to spin. Katharine's NOTES ON SPINNING WITH A NAVAJO SPINDLE will be available for purchase for $12.
